It is incredible to see scientists involved in something that seems like a small issue in everyday life, but when looked at in more depth it becomes a huge issue as 2.5 billion coffee cups are used in the UK each year. The scientists acknowledge that there is a need for change in our disposable, throw away attitudes and feel that "We believe that we can use things and throw them away, and that mentality has to stop". They have made a positive contribution to improve this attitude and problem in the modern day world by creating a fully recyclable coffee cup, this is great news for our environment.
This article details how we do not use our bins correctly which is entirely true, a lot of waste bins are filled with recyclable products. These scientists have acknowledged this and offered a solution that alongside using there fully recyclable cups, coffee shops could take a deposit for the use of the cup which will be returned when the cup is and allows them to ensure it is placed in the correct bin and recycled. Our modern day society often values money more than people, this method would most likely be very successful due to this constant need for wanting and keeping money as it will make people feel like they can get something out of recycling. It is sad that money needs to be involved to get this process to be successful and that the modern society do not care enough to just recycle out of kind will to the world and the environment, but if this method becomes popular in coffee shops it should marketed and extended to bars and restaurants to assist the environment even further.
This article links to my practice as a huge amount of waste when filming is from catering and refreshments, this idea should be applied to the film and television industry to make it more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
