Bryan Singer leaves Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody in middle of production. Gwilym Mumford and agencies Tuesday 5 December 2017 00.25 GMT

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/dec/05/bryan-singer-leaves-queen-biopic-bohemian-rhapsody-in-middle-of-production This article offers two sides of this story, allowing personal interpretation to decide who to believe. It appears highly likely that the producers opinion is true as his personal reasons seem honest as he details that his parents health matters took a toll of his own health. This is an understandable issue which would get in the way of any individuals job role, Fox not permitting him t o put his own and his parents health first seems likely as large scale productions can not pause for one person. This is because people are easily replaced within the industry as there are hundreds of people waiting for any opportunity. This large volume of people trying to get into the industry takes away security within many job roles and also makes even well known and popular producers replaceable, let alone those who are not known. This element makes the industry even ...

Oceans under greatest threat in history, warns Sir David Attenborough. Damian Carrington, Environment editor. Tuesday 5 December 2017 06.30 GMT

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/dec/05/oceans-under-greatest-threat-in-history-warns-sir-david-attenborough This topic has been very dominant in the news within the last 12 weeks and it has engaged, interested and educated me a lot within this time. I knew very little about our oceans and this topic being popular has made me much more aware of the sustainable issues occurring within the world today. This has inspired me to help save our blue planet, a small method of doing this is by bringing further attention to the topic through adding visuals of polluted oceans into my major project and this final episode within the series could assist me. David Attenborough's voice over will now be added alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Morgan Freeman as he has a connection and respect from audiences. His opinion that we have the responsibility to care for our blue planet is entirely true as this issue is completely our fault which people need to realise. Hopefully the p...

Clean air target 'could be met more quickly' By Roger Harrabin BBC environment analyst, 27 November 2017 .

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-42141778 It is extremely refreshing to read an article which offers positive news on sustainability methods as it appears that most articles are heavily negative towards the topic. It is fair that the government uses a longer time expectancy for this to be completed as they would be slated if it was not completed within the given time frame, this extra time stated covers their back on any issues which may occur within the process. Although these reports make the governments target appear uneducated and brief as researchers have highlighted that this target could be met more quickly which is good news to any reader as we all have a responsibility on improving the impact we have created to our planet and its atmosphere and it is positive to hear that it is not as bad as they previously thought. There is still a huge amount of action needed to meet this target and improve the environment and the human race's health as air that is not...

Stella McCartney calls for overhaul of 'incredibly wasteful' fashion industry. Sandra Laville, Tuesday 28 November 2017 06.01 GMT

ht tps://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/nov/28/stella-mccartney-calls-for-overhaul-of-incredibly-wasteful-fashion-industry This is very educational and eye opening for individuals who are unaware of the production scale and waste within the fashion industry. Its hard to believe that these figures are true as they are so extreme and baffling to read, these figures could make any reader feel guilty if they are considered as part of the throw away nature we have within this modern age. As an individual with this nature I definitely feel guilty and awful reading this, I am at fault as I have purchased clothes and worn them once before later on giving them to charity shops and feeling like the issue is sorted through this action. It is worrying to read that the greenhouse emissions from the fashion industry is larger than international flights as most people would assume that travel within this large scale would be the biggest issue, not clothes we wear everyday and don't thi...

African Elephants, Change.org email. 21/11/2017 9:53

Email:  "Lucy —  On Wednesday, the Trump administration announced that they might start allowing the import of hunting trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia. Trophy hunting is the hunting of wild animals for fun. The trophy is the animal or part of the animal kept, and usually displayed to show off the success of the hunt. Kathleen Martin started a petition to urge the U.S. Government not to lift the ban of African elephant trophies.   Almost half a million signed her petition, and now, thanks to the public reaction, the policy is temporarily on hold for “review”. African elephants are listed as threatened  under the Endangered Species Act. The lift of a trophy ban is only allowable if hunting would benefit the survival of the species. In Zimbabwe they recently lifted the ban and have seen a six percent decline in the country’s elephant population alone.  Kathleen believes that President Trump lifting this ban could have global consequences, and enough pressu...

Daughters of brain-damaged woman win case for removal of feeding tube. Nigel Bunyan Monday 30 October 2017 19.22 GMT

https://www.theguardian.com/law/2017/oct/30/daughters-brain-damaged-woman-mrs-p-removal-feeding-tube-preston-salford This story will gain a very split opinion from readers as it features others making life decisions for someone who can no longer make their own. It appears that the daughters are respecting their mothers wishes of not allowing her to carry on in a way she would not like others to see, whereas her sisters are fighting against them to keep her alive in a minimal conscious state. This would be a huge decision for any daughter to make as it leaves them without a mother, the fact that these daughters would fight for this to happen shows how much they respect their mother and adamantly know what she would have wanted, in this case it makes the decision and the court appearance entirely understandable. A touching element of this story is that the woman's grandson stood up in court at only 12 years old to give evidence that his grandmother should be allowed to die whi...

DGA reports increase in ethnic, gender diversity among TV directors. By Elbert Wyche 14 November 2017

https://www.screendaily.com/news/dga-reports-increase-in-ethnic-gender-diversity-among-tv-directors/5124225.article It is very positive that ethnic and gender diversity is finally beginning to occur within the television production industry, especially within high job roles. All of the percentages are refreshing to view and the increase can be visually seen in comparison to prior years but the question which is always considered is how has it taken so long for this to happen? In our modern world these percentages should have appeared years ago and it is disappointing that is has taken until 2016 for them to reach this high. The television and film industry often release various statistics which makes them appear as modern industries but when compared to others in the arts they are extremely behind on ethnic and gender diversity which they need to accept and ensure they pioneer ways to change this negative element of the industry, making them truly modern in every aspect and not only ...

Our Planet Is Choking On Trash And We Are All To Blame. Caroline Power Photographer, Nicholas Bach A director of the Roatan Marine Park. 08/11/2017 19:45 GMT

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/caroline-power/planet-choking-trash_b_18502224.html?utm_hp_ref=uk-sustainability It appears unbelievable that in 2050 the plastic pieces within the sea will outnumber fish. This is the terrifying future for our oceans, due to the human race and our unsustainable actions there seems to be no positive element in the future of our oceans or the species within it. It is clear that the entire human population on the planet is to blame for this forced negative impact on our natural areas and for that we should all feel guilty and at least attempt to make a change. The easiest way to make a change has always been to recycle, this article highlights how the impact is so damaging that recycling alone isn't enough to make a dramatic difference but refusing, reducing, reusing then recycling can. The fact that this process is now longer is likely to put people with busy lives off of the process and may urge them to not take part in it. The images within this ...

Swedish Film Institute to introduce sexual conduct education. By Tom Grater 15 November 2017

https://www.screendaily.com/news/swedish-film-institute-to-introduce-sexual-conduct-education-exclusive/5124221.article This introduction is clearly due to the individuals within the film industry who abuse their power being brought to light and plastered all over the media. There are two ways to approach this introduction, the first being that it is great that some countries are acknowledging the issues in the industry and ensuring there are actions taken towards it. It is surprising that this action is not coming from a more dominant country within the industry but instead one with a smaller impact, this movement from Sweden has made the UK consider a similar idea which they may not have considered without this prompt. It is brave of Sweden to introduce this education due to their smaller impact in the industry and their high level of reports of sexual misconduct which brands them negatively. It is also very smart that companies would need to go through the process to gain funding ...

Meet The Scientists Who Have Made Coffee Cups Recyclable. by Charley Ross 29/09/2017 03:15pm

http://sourced.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2017/09/29/meet-the-scientists-who-have-made-coffee-cups-recyclable/ It is incredible to see scientists involved in something that seems like a small issue in everyday life, but when looked at in more depth it becomes a huge issue as 2.5 billion coffee cups are used in the UK each year. The scientists acknowledge that there is a need for change in our disposable, throw away attitudes and feel that " We believe that we can use things and throw them away, and that mentality has to stop". They  have made a positive contribution to improve this attitude and problem in the modern day world by creating a fully recyclable coffee cup, this is great news for our environment.  This article details how we do not use our bins correctly which is entirely true, a lot of waste bins are filled with recyclable products. These scientists have acknowledged this and offered a solution that alongside using there fully recyclable cups, coffee shops could...

‘Stranger Things’ creators criticised after forcing teen actors to perform unscripted kiss. Nick Reilly Nov 7, 2017

http://www.nme.com/news/music/stranger-things-creators-criticised-for-unscripted-kiss-2157077 This article was discovered after reading the article regarding a young actor in this show receiving negative criticism which is very concerning, this article creates even more concern over the show and its negative impacts to the young cast members. When reading this article it seemed unrealistic that this would be allowed to happen, making the embedded video of an interview seem more reliable. Soon into watching the video which was uncomfortable to view it was clear that the text which appeared unrealistic was entirely true, the directors blamed the young actress for the kiss she was clearly not comfortable with and described how he said it was in the script to her as a joke and due to her stressed reaction he felt they should carry it out. This is completely wrong in every sense of the word, if she was stressed due to this and it was never written in the script it should not have been car...

Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner Defends Stranger Things Kids Following Fan Criticism By Megan McCluskey November 6, 2017

http://time.com/5012582/game-of-thrones-sophie-turner-defends-stranger-things-kids/ It is extremely unethical that adults would give a 14 year old criticism for not acknowledging them, in a normal circumstance this would be classed as harassment but as the 14 year old is an actor it is allowed and dismissed as the norm. It is very sad that a teenager cannot walk a small distance without being expected to stop to speak to fans, being an actor is a job role and in this case when the actor is playing a character in a hit television series people forget that the individual has a personal life outside of their role and character. Sophie Turner, who began filming Game of Thrones when she was only 15 and was suddenly launched into fame when the series became popular worldwide can relate to this criticism. She has used her public platform to defend the young actor and express her concern over allowing the young actors to "grow without feeling like they owe anyone anything for living the...

Study: Climate Change Is Damaging the Health of Millions of People - Patricia Espinosa and Richard Horton

http://time.com/4999425/climate-change-health-2/ This article stands out most amongst others due to the title being very concerning, most of the billions of individuals on this planet are aware of climate change and the impacts it has on the environment and our planet but this is new information that millions of people's health is being damaged due to the effects of it. We see news stories on the saddening large amounts of people who suffer and die due to natural disasters which we are aware is the result of climate change. The further effects of climate change on the everyday life of the general public has never been made entirely clear until  20,000 delegates from around the world met in Germany. The information discussed is shocking and will hopefully force people to wake up and make changes to their life to help climate change before it forces negative changes upon theirs.

My trip to Dublin 25/10/2017 - 27/10/17.

A trip to Dublin highlighted the huge increase in unsustainable developments within busy cities which I hadn't seen on this high scale before. When travelling to the city I was shocked to see the large amount of cranes towering over buildings and the huge chimneys shooting up to the sky releasing thick smoke which looked damaging to the planet. This view continued in some areas of the city centre which were very industrialised and there was a constant feeling of change and development throughout the city with cranes and scaffolding being very dominant, this was made very distinctive around older areas of the city which were ruined by the looming modern buildings surrounding them. The city appeared as many capital cities within the world do, as highly populated with limited sustainable housing which creates the urge for quick and unsustainable building.  It is common for a city of its size to have industrial areas but larger cities often make their industrial areas sustainable and a...

Blue Planet II - presented and narrated by David Attenborough

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04tjbtx The second instalment of Blue Planet aired last night, this wildlife documentary series opens our eyes and minds to the mysteries of the ocean. It is very common for an individual to be uneducated about what goes on within the deep oceans around the world as there is so much that is yet to be discovered. This episode in the series featured stunning visuals and interesting information which engaged and surprised audiences, alongside these intriguing visuals there was the usual voice over by David Attenborough who audiences adore. Within this voice over he brought the audiences attention to the problems within our seas due to human consumption and use, this was done in a very polite and subtle manner as audiences would expect from Attenborough. He detailed how our waste effects the species and their habitats, by placing this speech over the stunning visuals of the species in their natural habitats and the information coming from an individual as...

Unnatural Phenomena: Three Weird Things That Shouldn’t Be Happening Right Now... Plum Turner 16/10/2017 13:06

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/plum-turner/unnatural-phenomena-three_b_18278038.html?utm_hp_ref=uk-sustainability The word 'weird' in the title really does capture the thought you have when seeing these images. The visible dark blue streak running through a river from denim production within the textile industry is extremely concerning, it is rare that this is visibly seen by individuals on the other side of the world and really opens up your eyes to the huge production for the textile industry china offers. It is unbelievable to comprehend that there are areas of oceans and lakes with no oxygen within the water due to this contamination, after the initial feeling of shock when seeing this there is a suddenly rush of sadness after thinking of all of the living species killed within this "dead zone". To think that lakes half the size of England are disappearing is puzzling to say the least, these lakes were created to support the unsustainable cotton and wheat ind...

High-street outlets move to ditch plastic amid environmental concerns. Nicola Davis Monday 16 October 2017 06.00 BST

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/16/high-street-outlets-move-to-ditch-plastic-amid-environmental-concerns 'Pret A Manger has become the latest to take action,  announcing  that it has installed taps dispensing free filtered water and started selling empty glass bottles in its three vegetarian stores. The scheme is due to be rolled out to branches in Manchester from the end of October.' This is a positive article to read, the beginning of a movement of removing plastic bottles from stores sounds like a very sustainable action. Its great to read until it states that this is only happening in three stores in the beginning and then even when it is spread across more stores, plastic bottles will still be available to buy. Due to our throw away society in the modern day, it is likely that a lot of people will still purchase the plastic bottles, also many people do not like change and will want to stick with what they are used to. The idea behind the movement is re...

Twitter - Lena Headey‏ - Verified account @IAMLenaHeadey Oct 17

https://twitter.com/IAMLenaHeadey Social media often gains a negative reputation, much more than a positive one. It is commonly known to disengage the digital age from the real world, making them more interested in the online world which is full of danger and criticism. Today and in recent weeks this negative reputation has been turned into a platform for individuals to speak out and tell their story in a very brave and public manner, it has allowed them to see that others in the same situation have spoken out and received support from thousands of people online. Tweeting a story makes it possible for millions of users to read it, even more when the individual is on some type of public platform due to their job role.  It was today that Game of Thrones star Lena Headley decided to share her story on the ongoing Harvey Weinstein investigation, 4 sad tweets detailed the story that he made suggestive comments towards her which she shut down and years later he man handled her and be...

Chicago Is Fighting Climate Change No Matter What Trump Says. Debbie Carlson 10/12/2017 06:01 am ET

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/chicago-climate-change-rahm-emanuel_us_59de80d4e4b0eb18af05fb98?utm_hp_ref=sustainability Its great to see that states within America are being independent and making their own choices thanks to their mayor's who back and stand for the individuals living within the states opinions. Many Americans are angry over having Donald Trump as the countries president and became furious when he pulled America out of the Paris agreement. This bold decision shocked the world and it appears to have created a bigger divide within the country. It is great to see that people are standing up against this unwanted change, not allowing themselves to be tarnished by the same brush and appear dumb to the rest of the world alongside Donald Trump. Chicago is a great state to lead a rebellion against pulling from the agreement as the mayor states that they alone are proof that "you can create jobs while reducing your carbon footprint". Due to the city being ...

Actor Terry Crews: I was sexually assaulted by Hollywood executive. Gwilym Mumford Wednesday 11 October 2017 13.08 BST

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/oct/11/actor-terry-crews-sexually-assaulted-by-hollywood-executive An article with this issue is very rare as it is unlikely that males speak out on sexual assault which makes Terry Crews very brave and hopefully inspiring to anyone with the fear of speaking out. He is very honest in this telling of the story and even explains why he didn't speak out at the time, his reasoning is sadly related to his race with him saying he would go to jail and " 240 lbs. Black Man stomps out Hollywood Honcho" would be the headline the next day. This is very sad and eye opening to read as he felt the assault would be turned on him just due to the reputation of his race. Free speech is a human right and due to our non modern, modern society in terms of race he didn't feel as though he had any freedom of speech. He states due to the recent allegations against  Harvey Weinstein he wanted to speak out to  “deter a predator and encourage someon...

Tescos Bags of Ethics by Julien MacDonald

http://bagsofethics.org/bags-of-talent/ As an owner of one of these bags for around a year, it was not until I recently saw the tag stating 'Bags of Ethics' which I had seen many times before, today I looked at it in a different mindset due to this module. When purchasing the bag it was obvious that it was more sustainable than a plastic carrier bag as it is reusable, when researching into the bag it became clear it was much more than a usual bag for life. The slogan "you are what you carry" opens the mind to thinking about other accessories and how they are not sustainable what so ever, unlike this bag which is 100% cotton and durable. The stylish design offers a fashionable alternative to plastic bags and is a refreshing way to attract consumers to using more sustainable materials rather than bags for life with the shops name printed across it which you wouldn't want to use an accessory. This turns being sustainable into fashion thanks to the collaboration...

It may not be possible to slow down fast fashion so can the industry ever be sustainable? Mark Sumner Sunday 1 October 2017 14:34 BST

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/fashion/it-may-not-be-possible-to-slow-down-fast-fashion-so-can-the-industry-ever-be-sustainable-a7970031.html The title of this article alone is worrying, stating that it may not be possible to slow down fast fashion brings the question to mind of what will happen if they do not find a way make this sustainable? the predictions for 2030 offers statistics on water use, waste and carbon footprint caused by the industry. Although they are making significant progress in being sustainable, the fast demand for fashion makes this effort have a lesser impact as the consumer damage overweights the progress due to the fast increase in consumers buying clothes. As consumers we continue to buy clothes even though " It is estimated there is more than £30bn of clothing sitting in wardrobes across the UK that haven’t been used for over 12 months." This article makes us as consumers appear greedy and is proof of the throw away society we have become...

Harvey Weinstein: bombshell allegations hint at dark side to Hollywood kingmaker. Benjamin Lee Friday 6 October 2017 02.38 BST

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/oct/05/harvey-weinstein-sexual-harassment-allegations-film-industry-response This news article has appeared  due to The New York Times accusing the movie producer of “decades of sexual harassment" which isn't the first time this producer has been linked to such claims. There have been rumours of this behaviour following him throughout his career but the victims have only just brought themselves to speak out, more and more victims have made their story public after hearing of others telling of their situations with the producer. The large amount of people within the industry who have spoken out on this issue makes it appear entirely true when reading the article, with some stating that he and his brothers are bullies. These statements make the film industry appear as even more of a sad state for females to work within as no one should have to put up with this kind of behaviour in their place of work and worry about speakin...

These 4 Filmmakers Are Shattering Their Industry’s Gender Barriers 12/09/2016 09:44 am - Updated Dec 13, 2016 Presented by Georg Jenson

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/4-filmmakers-shattering-film-industry-gender-barriers_us_57d6ebbbe4b03d2d459b9935 This article is very refreshing to read, it focuses on gender barriers within the film industry but in a positive view rather than a negative which dwells on the facts and figures of the lack of females within film production this turns the attention to empowering woman. The article gives information on four female film makers including their interesting back story and rise to success and the problems they encountered along the way due to being over powered by men. Although they were working much harder and for longer hours these incredible individuals did not allow the issues get in their way and would not accept being over powered due to their gender, they knew what they wanted to be and achieve and made sure no one could stop them in their path. As a female film maker who wants to be part of the industry myself I find these women and their stories very empowering a...

Scottish Power says UK will need to boost capacity By Douglas Fraser Business/economy editor, Scotland 25 September 2017

ht tp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-41373466 'The energy firm said electric cars and a shift to electric heating could send demand for power soaring.' This article is very ironic, due to the increasing climate change people have made an attempt to better themselves and become more eco-friendly through buying electric cars and changing to electric heating. This sudden change in car and home power has likely to have arisen from the increased marketing on being more sustainable for our planet and the species living upon it. Also more and more car manufactures are creating hybrid or electronic cars, as the article states this is creating a further demand for power which will essentially still harm the planet but in a different way to gas heating and fuelled cars. Although this is a step in the right direction it is still not entirely sustainable for our planet, one the most sustainable methods of power for houses is renewable energy such as s...

Big Antarctic iceberg edges out to sea By Jonathan Amos BBC Science Correspondent 22 September 2017

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-41366504 Location and size of the iceberg on the Antarctic Peninsula ' Widening gap: The picture contains data gathered on 13 and 16 September' This news article is sad for anyone to view, the images show a visual display of global warming effecting icebergs in the antarctic. Visually being able to see how large the icebergs which have edged out to sea are is not always something we would come by within an everyday news article, this makes this particular article very informative and eye opening. The size comparison to well known countries is just astonishing to see and allows readers to see the real impact of global warming and climate change. When it meets the south Atlantic it will become the largest iceberg within that area of our oceans causing worry that this will only get worse with bigger icebergs the size of bigger countries submerging into the sea, the human race needs to join together in discovering ways of i...

Researchers find 'culture of nepotism' in British film industry. Mark Brown Arts correspondent Wednesday 28 June 2017 20.00 BST

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/jun/28/researchers-find-culture-of-nepotism-in-british-film-industry It is astonishing that this even appears as an article in this modern day as it should no longer exist. It is good that large film companies such as Lucas film have noticed this problem and are trying to change the sad fact that diversity needs to still be improved within the film industry, they have created a plan to change this with supporting funds from the national lottery. A audit on film employment displayed shocking statistics on the lack of diversity and people not being acknowledged due to being from less advantaged backgrounds. The audit also displayed the lack of workers with a disability and that 40% of the industry were females getting paid on average £3000 less than males. All of these figures are proof that the film industry is extremely old fashioned and needs to completely modernise itself to even begin to look as fair and diverse as other arts industries...

The Guardian - British cinema's gender imbalance worse in 2017 than 1913, says BFI study. Mark Brown, Arts correspondent Wednesday 20 September 2017 18.11 BST

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/sep/20/british-cinema-gender-imbalance-worse-2017-bfi-filmography The vast amount of time for progression between these years would make anyone assume that there has been a large positive change of the gender imbalance within the film industry. This article displays the opposite of this assumption, even though the change within gender equality has been very positive for women since 1913.  "BFI’s new Filmography survey shows 31% of actors cast in films produced 104 years ago were women, with 2017’s figure 30%" The 1% difference is very significant in visually making industry professionals and audiences aware of the lack of females starring in films. This is highly likely to come as a shock to most as there are countless numbers of incredible actresses appearing in films every week in the box office, making it understandable that audiences wouldn't pay much attention to the fact that most of the cast are male. In the mode...
